Nomination

Candidates for the Classified School Employee of the Year award compete in the California Department of Education (CDE) state program as nominees of county offices of education. The CDE provides the county offices of education with the guidelines for submitting nominations along with the evaluation and selection criteria that will be used to select awardees at the state level. Each county office of education has the responsibility to identify their nominees through a local selection process as it deems appropriate.

Selection

The selection process begins with candidates whose names are submitted by county offices of education (COEs) and consists of two phases:

Phase I - Review of Written Applications

To evaluate the applications, the CDE will convene a selection committee consisting of school, district, and county office of education administrators; professional organizations; and CDE personnel. The committee evaluates all applications within the context of the selection criteria, which is organized around four themes:

  • Work Performance
  • School/Community Involvement
  • Leadership and Commitment
  • Above and Beyond

The selection committee selects the finalists.

Phase II - Selection of Award Winners

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction selects and announces the recipients of the Classified School Employee of the Year award. There will be one awardee in each of the following six categories:

  • Child Nutrition
  • Maintenance and Operations
  • Office and Technical
  • Para-Educator and Instructional Assistance
  • Support Services and Security
  • Transportation

There is no appeal process.
