I want to share with you an inspirational story.
The California School for the Deaf, Riverside recently won the
San Joaquin League Title for the first time. They completed the
phenomenal season with a record-breaking nine wins to capture
this prestigious title. This group of talented athletes did not
win their playoff game, but their success both on and off the
football field gives all of us something to smile about.
The national media, such as CNN, The Today Show, ESPN,
and Sports Illustrated are all inspired by the young
men from California School for the Deaf at Riverside (CSDR). People
have a hard time believing that a deaf football team can compete
against hearing high school football teams. We have learned, through
local, statewide, national and global news, a life lesson that
if one puts their mind to something and works hard, anything can
be accomplished.
It is so exciting to see a group of gifted players be able to
compete on a football team. A few players tried participating
in football at mainstream schools, with the help of interpreters,
but did not feel comfortable. At CSDR, the only all-deaf high
school in Southern California, the players feel at home; they
can be heard at our school.
We, in California, are very proud of these boys, but we are not
alone. Their story on CNN so moved a football coach in Germany
that he e-mailed the team to thank them for reminding him what
"both life and football are about."
CDSR Coach Len Gonzales summed it up best: "Teams hate to
lose to us because they think we’re handicapped. But we’re
not handicapped. We just can’t hear."
Well, this football team has been heard not only by the opposing
football teams, but also throughout the nation and world!
