SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced 26 school districts in California will share nearly $10 million in new Title II, Part D, Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) competitive grants. "These grants will help disadvantaged students cross the digital divide and give them the tools necessary to compete in our increasingly technological world," said O'Connell. "Without the skills to incorporate technology into their lives, these students could fall farther behind in preparing for more challenging jobs in the global economy."
EETT is a federal grant authorized under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. Eligible applicants were restricted to local educational agencies, county offices of education, and direct-funded charter schools that serve students in grades four through eight who meet federal poverty guidelines. The grant was competitive and awarded on a geographic basis to districts in the 11 California Technology Assistance Project regions that serve schools throughout the state.
The 26 grantees were selected based on the quality of the programs, professional development for teachers, collaboration and partnerships, self evaluation, and sustainability.
The funds must be used in districts to develop and implement a comprehensive education technology program that helps students meet or exceed state academic content standards. Goals for the program include expanding access to electronic learning resources and tools, such as computers, digital curriculum materials, and technical support. The grantees must seek partnerships with other people or groups that support student achievement. At least 25 percent of the funds must be used for teacher professional development in the use of education technology. The grantees are also required to effectively evaluate their programs and to determine the impact of their success on student achievement.
