State Schools Chief Jack O'Connell Announces Adopted
Instructional Resources for Math Available for Public Review

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced the State Board of Education has completed the 2007 adoption of kindergarten through grade eight mathematics materials for California students. The complete list of adopted materials is attached.

"The next step is for local school districts to begin their own process of review to determine which of the adopted programs best meets the needs of their students," said O'Connell. "With such a wide variety of choices, districts should be able to tailor an instructional program that will help all students achieve. I am pleased that the adoption of some of the materials is designed to help us close the achievement gap."

O'Connell has made closing the achievement gap his top priority. He will hold a meeting of state and national education leaders in Sacramento on November 13-14, to hear their input on causes and potential solutions to why African American and Hispanic students are performing at levels below their white and Asian peers. For more information on the Achievement Gap Summit, please visit Closing the Achievement Gap - Initiatives, Projects, & Programs.

On November 8, 2007, the State Board of Education conducted a public hearing on the list of instructional materials for mathematics submitted by 33 publishers, and voted to adopt 41 programs. In all, 54 programs were reviewed and considered for adoption making this one of the largest adoptions conducted by the state. Programs were submitted in three separate categories: Basic Grade-level – designed to provide a full year of instruction in all of the mathematics standards; Algebra Readiness – focusing on building and reinforcing skills necessary to succeed in algebra; and Intervention Programs – designed to provide additional support to students who are struggling in mathematics. The State Board adopted 22 Basic Grade-level programs, 8 Algebra Readiness programs, and 11 Intervention programs. The Intervention and Algebra Readiness programs are expected to be of great assistance in closing the achievement gap in grades four through eight.

The adopted programs will remain on display at the Learning Resources Display Centers during the adoption process.  For a list of Learning Resource Display Centers located throughout the state, please visit Learning Resource Display Centers (LRDC) - Curriculum Frameworks & Instructional Materials.
