State Schools Chief Jack O'Connell
Welcomes Students Back to School

Meets with Students, Teachers and Businesses to Remind All Californians
That They Have a Stake in Improving Public Education

SAN DIEGO – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today greeted San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) students on their first day in a newly reopened automotive technology lab at the Crawford High Educational Complex. The school's career technical education program is a partnership between San Diego Unified School District, Mirimar College, and several local auto businesses. The automotive technology program is designed to prepare students for careers as technicians at local auto dealerships and for engineering programs at community colleges or four-year colleges and universities. Courses offered at the auto lab are through San Diego Unified's College, Career and Technical Education Program.

"We live in a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive world," O'Connell said. "It is important that we prepare students with a rigorous education that provides them with tools for success whether they intend to go to college or directly into a career. Crawford High's automotive technology program provides what I like to call the new three R's – rigorous academic instruction, relevant curriculum, and relationships with caring adults."

Superintendent O'Connell also thanked local business for their partnership with Crawford High in supporting the auto technology lab.

"We all have a stake in improving our schools, but businesses especially have a stake in public education. I hear constantly from employers that they want to hire employees who have a solid education and the practical skills to contribute to their operations. I commend San Diego's automobile industry for its taking such a keen interest in the education and in the future of students in their community."
