State Superintendent Jack O'Connell Comments on
Appellate Ruling on California High School Exit Exam
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today released the following statement on the State Court of Appeal ruling in Valenzuela v. Jack O'Connell.
"The State Court of Appeal’s ruling today in favor of the California High School Exit Exam hands a clear victory to students, parents, and the entire system of public education in California. I'm particularly pleased that the court's decision affirmed what I have long asserted, that the purpose of an education is not to equip students with diplomas but with essential skills they need to survive in a competitive global economy.
"The court's decision validates the state's efforts over the last 10 years to raise standards and expectations across the board and enhance educational opportunities for all students in California schools. The exit exam is a key piece of this effort, and retaining it will enable us to continue on the path of improving all schools.
"I also appreciate the court's acknowledgement that we all share the belief that all California children should have equal access to a public education system that will prepare them to survive and thrive as productive members of society. I have always advocated for the funds necessary to educate all students to our high standards. I welcome discussion about the resources and strategies necessary to accomplish this goal."
