State School Chief Jack O'Connell Appoints Fresno
Teacher to Reading First Advisory Panel

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell announced today the appointment of Annie Lokrantz of Fresno to the Reading First Advisory Panel. Lokrantz is a library media teacher at the Teague Elementary School in Fresno.

"Ms. Lokrantz's background in teaching, tireless volunteer work, and active memberships in education organizations are all assets that will help California children read well," said O'Connell.

Reading First is a component of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. The Reading First Advisory Panel focuses on establishing quality, comprehensive reading instruction for students in kindergarten through grade three. Studies show that building a solid foundation in reading at very early ages helps students learn in all subject areas throughout their academic career. Reading First grants help train teachers and administer classroom assessments to help teachers monitor and improve student achievement in reading skills. Funds also provide professional development for special education teachers, kindergarten through grade 12.

"Literacy grows through strong school libraries," said Lokrantz. "So I'm proud and honored to be on the Panel and to represent school districts that could benefit from receiving funds to help students read."

Lokrantz has 13 years experience in education. She started out as an academic block teacher in Easton, before working in her current job as a teacher in Fresno. She is a member in four professional associations and is a published author.
