Letter Head: Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, California Department of Education

June 25, 2008

Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

2008 FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE TEEN LEADERSHIP TRAINING INSTITUTE

It is my pleasure to invite you to select students to represent your district at the Annual Friday Night Live Teen Leadership Training Institute (TLTI). This training will be held August 5-8, 2008, at the University of California, Riverside. The Friday Night Live Coordinator in your county is a knowledgeable resource for help with the selection process. The TLTI is sponsored by the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, the Office of Traffic Safety, the California Friday Night Live Collaborative, the California Friday Night Live Partnership, the Tulare County Office of Education, and the California Department of Education along with other agencies that have been avid supporters of the training institute.

The objective of the TLTI is to create a safe environment where participants can engage in exploring peer-led prevention, youth development programs, and asset-based approaches to leadership skills. Participants also share and learn skills that will inspire and improve activities and projects in their schools and communities. I know this training will encourage young people and adults to work together energetically to define and craft solutions to problems such as alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. The TLTI will provide tremendous opportunities to develop skills and build partnerships. You will find this training to be a valuable enhancement to all the participants’ prevention education.

I encourage you to have students from your school participate. This activity is connected to the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities and Tobacco-Use Prevention Education programs. The TLTI is an approved activity under Appendix D of the local educational agency plan and can be considered school business, an allowable off campus school activity. Registration information is available on the California Friday Night Live Partnership Web site at http://www.fridaynightlive.org/ (Outside Source).

If you have any questions regarding this subject, please contact Marlena Uhrik, Education Programs Consultant, Safe and Healthy Kids Program Office, at 916-319-1025 or by e-mail at uhrik@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,
