Subject: Extension of USDA Administrative Hold on Coarse and Fine Ground Beef

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the administrative hold on all Westland Meat Company products produced between October 1, 2006 and February 29, 2008. The administrative hold will extend up to an additional 10 calendar days (February 19, 2008), pending further investigation from the USDA. The California Department of Education advises agencies not to use beef from Westland or processed end-products containing beef from Westland until further notice.

The commodity ground beef involved with this hold includes: Fine Ground Beef 40 (USDA Code A608) and Beef Bulk Coarse (USDA Code A594).

The following processors have made processed end-products that may or may not contain Westland beef. These processors have a full listing of lot numbers, product codes, and production dates available to assist agencies in determining which products contain Westland beef:

Advance Food Company
Don Lee Farms
Integrated
JTM Provisions, Inc.
MCI Foods
Pierre Foods
Rose and Shore Meat, Inc.

Agencies should contact the appropriate processor with questions regarding end-products containing Westland Meat Company beef. Agencies may also contact processors for information about the availability of non-commodity beef they may purchase.
