What is CNIPS?

CNIPS is the Web-based system that automates the administration of the California Department of Education Nutrition and Food Distribution Programs.

CNIPS will allow Web-based online entry of:

  • Claims submission and processing
  • New agency applications and annual update process
  • New site applications and site change requests
  • Commodity requests
  • Verification reporting
  • Food Safety Inspection reporting

CNIPS will enable Child Nutrition Agencies to:

  • Upload claim data from Point of Sale (POS) systems
  • Review the status of claim submissions online
  • Review the approval status of site applications and change requests
  • Download required forms

CNIPS Current Project Schedule for School Nutrition Programs

Activity Target Date
Perform User Acceptance Testing May/June/July/August 2008
Disseminate CNIPS User IDs, Passwords, and Training Information Late August 2008*
Implement Application Component August 25, 2008*
Submit Sponsor and Site Applications (validate contact, sponsor, and site data in the CNIPS) August 25 through October 3, 2008*
Receive CNIPS Training Starting August 19 and continuing into October 2008*
Begin Submitting Claims in the CNIPS October 2008 Claims: Start submitting November 2008 (due by December 22— the 50 day submission deadline)

*Dates subject to change based on User Acceptance Testing.

How will the CNIPS User IDs and Passwords be Distributed?

  • The Nutrition Services Division (NSD) will send the CNIPS Administrator their CNIPS User ID in one e-mail and their password in a separate e-mail for security purposes.
  • CNIPS User IDs and passwords are confidential and not to be shared or used by anyone other than the user for whom the User ID was created.

What is a CNIPS Administrator?

  • The CNIPS Administrator is the individual for whom NSD will create a CNIPS User ID and password with the security rights to create any additional User IDs needed based on the LEA’s organizational structure.
  • The person designated as the CNIPS Administrator should be the person who is knowledgeable about who should have access to what Security Group (e.g. “Submit Claim,” “Prepare Claim,” “Submit Application,” “Annual Update,”…etc).

How will Sponsors receive CNIPS training?

  • Web-based training
  • Regional classroom training (limited availability)
  • Robust online CNIPS Help features
  • Comprehensive CNIPS User Manual (will be posted on the CNIPS Web page)
  • Training information and registration will be made available on the CNIPS Web page
