SFPD Advisory 99-06

To: County and District Superintendents and School Facility and Maintenance and Operations Staff

Subject: Portables and Indoor Air Quality

Due to the recent attention on indoor air quality and portables we are reissuing the attached document titled, Advisory on Relocatable and Renovated Classrooms (Outside Source).

This document was developed by the California Interagency Working Group on Indoor Air Quality. The working group committee included 20 representatives from various state and local agencies, and was directed by the California Department of Health Services, Environmental Health Laboratory Branch, Indoor Air Quality Section.

The advisory was first issued in January 1997. It contains excellent, low cost and no cost methods to minimize potential health impacts from indoor environmental quality problems.

Please review the advisory and make every effort to comply with the recommendations. We also highly recommend U.S. EPA's publication IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit . The kit provides guidelines for achieving and maintaining good indoor air quality in your schools. The kit can be obtained by contacting U.S. EPA's Indoor Air Quality Information Clearinghouse at 800-438-4318.

If you have any questions please contact the California Department of Education, School Facilities Planning Division at 916-322-2470.

Sincerely,

DELAINE EASTIN
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
