SUBJECT:
Publisher Update and Survey for the 2006 Science Primary Adoption of Instructional Materials

The State Board of Education (SBE) is scheduled to adopt instructional materials in science in 2006. This is a primary adoption for basic materials for kindergarten through grade eight. The SBE-adopted evaluation criteria, standards maps, and timeline for this adoption are posted on the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources (CFIR) Division Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/sc/im/.

On June 23, 2004, the CFIR Division and the Curriculum Commission hosted a briefing for publishers on the Science Framework and the evaluation criteria for the 2006 Science Primary Adoption. As a follow-up to that briefing we are surveying publishers to determine the number who are interested in participating in this adoption.

Attached to the letter you will find a one-page survey form (DOC; 30KB; 1p.). Please fill out the form and return it by fax or mail it to the address provided on the form. This information will be used to help the California Department of Education (CDE) determine the needs for reviewers and space for the adoption, and does not commit you to participate in the 2006 adoption. The actual submission deadline for the 2006 Science Primary Adoption is March 1, 2006.

Publishers are asked to provide both an official contact and a California representative on the form, along with contact information for both individuals. The official contact is the primary person with whom CDE will deal on adoption-related issues; the California representative will receive a courtesy copy of all adoption-related correspondence. The official contact is responsible for ensuring that information is disseminated to those individuals responsible for meeting adoption-related deadlines and requirements. Publishers should submit a request in writing to the Department if they would like to change either or both of these contact persons, or update their contact information.

The next major event in the 2006 Science Primary Adoption for publishers will be the Publishers Invitation to Submit (ITS) meeting, which will be held on January 10, 2006. Respondents to our survey who expressed interest in participating in the adoption will receive another bulletin a few months before the ITS meeting, with specific information about times and locations.

If you have any questions about the 2006 Science Primary Adoption, or this survey, please contact Patrice Roseboom, Lead Consultant, Instructional Resources Unit, at 916-319-0509 or by e-mail at proseboo@cde.ca.gov.
