PUBLISHER PRESENTATION TIPS
2008 RLA/ELD PRIMARY ADOPTION
Attachment D

On the last day of the training session for an adoption, publishers have the opportunity to display, demonstrate, and discuss how their programs work with the review panel. Over the years, we have designed a formal presentation format and have compiled a list of guidelines for facilitators, reviewers, and publishers to follow. We ask that you adhere to the formal presentation timeline on the schedule that you will receive during the training week, and to follow the time allocations for the presentation segments that the Curriculum Framework and Instructional Resources (CFIR) staff will monitor. The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide you with a list of the guidelines and presentation times for the various program types.

Guidelines:
  • Publishers will be given time to set-up their rooms in a timely manner

(20 minutes) and time to clear materials from the room following the presentation (10 minutes).

  • Each presentation is timed and will have distinct segments: presentation time, question and answer time, and panel discussion time. Following the presentation, if there are no questions from the panel members or discussion needed, publishers can use the extra time for presentation time.

  • Proposed presentation times:

Intervention Programs 4 & 5 (grades 4-8)

45 minutes – program presentation

Note: all presentations include an additional 10 minutes for Content Review Panel (CRP)/Instructional Materials Advisory Panel (IMAP) members to ask questions of the publishers and 5 minutes for CRP/IMAP members to discuss the program with each other).

  • It is suggested that you spend the major portion of your allocated presentation time presenting a balanced discussion of the instructional materials and how they relate to the Framework, content standards, and the evaluation criteria.
  • A brief review of the essential components of the program at the end of the presentation may reinforce the salient points made earlier.
  • A majority of the panel members are classroom teachers. Therefore, presenting materials from a teacher’s viewpoint and indicating how they will be used in the classroom will probably be most effective.
  • You may display or hand out any type of material. Regardless of what is displayed or discussed, CRP and IMAP members may only consider in their evaluation those materials submitted for adoption. Therefore, we recommend that your presentation focus on materials submitted for adoption. All handouts must be collected from the CRP and IMAP members at the end of the presentation. Two copies may be retained by the CFIR staff and one by the facilitator.
  • The panel facilitators act as hosts, so please let them know the names of the presenters from your company. The facilitator will make brief introductions, intercede only when necessary to enforce the time limits, and thank publishers at the conclusion of the presentations.
  • The facilitators and reviewers are expected to be in their seats, ready for the presentation by the time shown on the schedule. CFIR staff will time the publishers’ presentation and advise the publishers when they need to stop and move into the Question and Answer and Discussion sessions.

  • All individuals in the room should have ALL OF their ELECTRONIC CELL PHONES and PAGERS OFF. We do not want any of the speakers to be interrupted or disturbed during the scheduled times.
  • CRPs, IMAPs, and facilitators are to remain in the room for the entire presentation.
