Overview
In the spring of 2006, the California Department of Education (CDE) conducted an on-line survey to determine the number of extended-day kindergarten programs in districts throughout the state. The California Kindergarten Survey 2006 (CKS 2006), a first-time data collection of kindergarten programs in California, was administered through the CDE Web site.
The 2004-05 California Basic Education Data System (CBEDS) school data were used to identify schools in the survey population. This data source identified 5600 schools as having kindergarten enrollment during the 2004-05 school year. Reportedly, 950 of the 2,815 schools responding to the survey reported one or more extended-day kindergarten programs.
Several limitations to the data limit accurate estimates of the extent to which extended-day programs exist in California elementary schools:
- The response rate for the survey was approximately 50 percent, and the characteristics of those schools responding have not been compared to the non-respondents
- A school reporting an extended-day kindergarten could have one or several classes meeting the definition for extended-day and the survey does not allow the actual number of classes at a site to be identified
- The survey provides point-in-time data (although respondents could enter information from April until November 2006)
It is therefore likely that the data collected underrepresent the actual numbers of classes and students in extended-day kindergarten. Any use of this data should take the limitations into consideration before drawing conclusions.
