The Business Education Core Assessment Project (BECAP) has been developed to assess the general knowledge of student understanding of the Business Education Core Standards identified in the California Virtual Enterprise Program (Outside Source). The Business Education Core is broad-based and facilitates the integration of academic and career technical knowledge. The Business Education Core features standards that address the knowledge and skills that provide a foundation for the pursuit of one of the Business Education Career Path Clusters. Students who master the Business Education Core Standards will be able to better utilize oral and written business communication skills and demonstrate the appropriate use of critical thinking, decision-making, and problem solving skills needed for the high performance workplace.
The Business Education Core Standards are divided into seven categories;
- Business Communications
- Business Environment
- Career Preparation, Job Acquisition and Retention
- Economics and Financial Concepts
- Employability Skills
- Information Technologies
- Leadership Development
Mastery of the Business Education Core Standards also supports the core academic standards identified for inclusion on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
In a joint effort between the Business Education Project through the California Institute on Human Services at Sonoma State University, the Kern High School District, and the California Department of Education, the assessment of the Business Education Core Standards has been made available as a pilot project. Questions regarding the use of the online Business Education Core Assessment Project should be addressed to Dean McGee, Principal, Regional Occupation Center, Kern High School District, 661-831-3327, or dmcgee@khsd.k12.ca.us. Questions or technical assistance regarding the Business Education Core Standards should be addressed to Kay Ferrier, Consultant, High School Initiatives/Career Education Office, California Department of Education, 916-319-4747.
